May Day in Greece

May DayMay Day, next Thursday, is a public holiday in Greece, as it is in many countries.

Since May Day corresponds with the peak of the flower season, flower shows and festivals are common. The ancient Minoans are believed to have celebrated one of their two ‘New Year’ celebrations about this time,  the other was in October.

One common Greek tradition, is the making of a May wreath which is hung on doorways, balconies, in chapels, and many other places. The wreaths are displayed until 24 June, the day of the Festival of Saint John, when they are ceremoniously burnt on bonfires.

On May Day, many Greek towns and villages hold parades, which are often followed by traditional singing and dancing to celebrate Spring.

Most monuments, museums, and attractions as well as many shops will be closed. However, the vast majority of restaurants and tavernas will be open, to cater for families and friends who see the holiday as an opportunity to get together for a festive meal.
