Earthquakes on Mount Athos
Saturday, June 7, 15:58 – A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.4 struck in the North Aegean at 15:46 local time this afternoon. It was followed by a quake of magnitude 3.8 at 15:54.
Early indications are that the focal point of the first tremor was on the peninsula of Mount Athos, the eastern of the three peninsulas of Halkidiki. The second was just off the west coast of Mount Athos.
The larger of the two quakes had a focal depth of 10 km, whereas the smaller had a focal depth of only 2 km.
The tremors were felt on the island of Thassos and across Northern Greece as well as in southern Bulgaria.
There are no reports of injuries or damage so far.
16:30 – Further aftershocks of magnitude 3.0 occurred at 16:11 and 2.6 at 16:25, the first west of the first tremor and at a depth of 2 km and the latter south of the main tremor at a depth of 10 km.
18:00 – A spate of weak aftershocks continues both on Mount Athos and just off its western coast, but so far, the tremors have only ranged between magnitudes 2.0 and 3.0.
