Earthquake Northeast of Santorini
December 21 – An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale occurred early this morning northeast of the island of Santorini, at a depth of 12 km.
The tremor occurred at 01:13 local time, 36 km northeast of Santorini and 10 km southwest of the island of Amorgos.
Since the initial tremor, there have been three aftershocks in the same area, one with a maximum strength of 3.1.
No damage has been recorded.
Between late January and early March this year, over 25,000 earthquakes occurred in the same area between Santorini and Amorgos island. Hundreds were large enough to be felt at the time, with a few exceeding magnitude 4.5. The seismic unrest prompted a local state of emergency, resulting in school closures and fear amongst both locals and tourists, which led to many leaving Santorini. The residents started to return later in March as the seismic activity subsided.
