Storm Force Winds, Rhodes
Thursday, January 22 – In the last 24 hours, the island of Rhodes has been experiencing severe storms, including torrential rain and gale-force winds reaching as high as 10 and 11 Beaufort.
The storms have caused serious damage on the island, including 5 fishing boats that sank in the port of “Kolona” in Rhodes Town. Trees have been brought down across the island, and a number of coastal roads have had to be closed due to being blocked by sea and wind-driven debris.
Many parts of Greece have been experiencing severe weather, with record-breaking levels of rain in Attica, which led to the death by drowning of a 56-year-old woman in Ano Glyfada, a suburb of Athens.
In Astros, a town on the shore of the Argolic Gulf, a 53-year-old Coast Guard, who had been securing boats in the harbour, was washed into the sea and drowned.
