Age Old Custom Threatened
The age-old Greek custom of breaking plates after meals is sadly becoming a growing problem for local restaurants, especially on the Greek islands, due to the rising cost of replacements.
Holidaymakers are therefore being asked from April 1 to bring their own crockery with them to Greece, so that when eating out, they can happily enjoy the festivity, and the ancient custom can continue into the future.
However, be assured that if you don’t take part in the custom, your plates will be washed and returned to you before you leave the restaurant (cutlery will still be provided by restaurants).
To prevent any delays on arrival, Greek Customs officers have been made aware of the reason why holidaymakers may be carrying a large number of plates in their luggage.
