German Wreck off Marmari, Kos

A new drone video has been downloaded to Youtube of the German WWII landing craft F-131, which was sunk off Kos on the night of October 20, 1943, by the British motor torpedo boat MTB 307.

The night was clear and there was plenty of moonlight. At two o’clock in the morning, three British torpedo boats which had left the island of Kalymnos approached German-held Kos. As they drew nearer, they discerned the shapes of two German boats just off the Marmari beach. Moving closer they fired two torpedoes, the first missed its target skidded up the beach and blew up in an ammunition and fuel dump, turning the night into day. The second torpedo hit the F-131 in the bow, destroying that section and sinking the boat where it now lies. In the following years, all useful parts were taken by the locals, leaving what can be seen now, as a rusted and weather-worn wreck.

The wreck lies a few metres off the beach at Marmari.
