Helmets and Seat Belts – Update

If you are planning to hire a motorbike/scooter, or a car during your holiday in Greece, please be aware of the law concerning safety.

Recently the law has changed and instead of a fine for both not wearing a helmet on a motorbike/ scooter, or not wearing seatbelts in a car, the fine was 350€ for each person contravening the law.

The new law states that the rider/driver will have their driving licence confiscated for a period of 60 days. With regard to tourists found breaking the law, after 60 days, if they have left Greece, their driving licence will be forwarded on to their respective Embassy, to be returned back to them in their country of origin.

During the tourist season, police safety checks become more widespread and rigorous on the islands.
