Human Remains in the Antikythera Wreck

wreck-thumb-largeTwo divers from a team investigating the Roman-era shipwreck off the Aegean island of Antikythera have discovered ancient human remains, presumably of one of the crew.

It was in the year 1900 that Greek sponge divers discovered the wreck, which became famous for one artefact that had been part of its ancient cargo, the Antikythera Mechanism, a highly sophisticated device many regards as the world’s oldest known analogue computer.

The team from the Greek Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, working with the US-based Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, discovered the human skeleton in the wreck during an expedition that took place from August 28 to September 14. Scientists will be examining the remains in the hope of confirming their age, ethnicity and gender.
