Overtourism across Greece
As overtourism protests continue in many tourist hotspots in southern Europe, including Spain, France and Italy, the Greek island of Symi, one of the islands in the Dodecanese chain, has taken action to try and limit the number of tourists visiting the island.
Last week, the local municipality decided to implement a 3 euro fee for all day visitors arriving on the island without a booked overnight stay, particularly from nearby larger islands such as Kos and Rhodes.
The charge is already being enforced, collected by ferry companies and agencies that organise excursions to Symi. The revenue generated will support the services supplied by the local council that benefit both residents and tourists.
Many Greek tourist destinations are suffering from overtourism and the effect it has on the limited infrastructure, especially on the smaller islands.
Other Greek islands such as Mykonos and Santorini have already introduced similar measures, including cruise ship passenger fees and stricter regulations on short-term rentals, to balance the much-needed revenue from tourism with the preservation of local communities and the environment.
