Free Sat-Nav App
If you’ve a smartphone or tablet with GPS, here’s a nifty way to turn it into a sat-nav abroad, with local maps, for free, without using up any pricey data overseas. It isn’t a fully-fledged system like paid sat-navs, but when we tested the app, we found it very good, whether in a vehicle, or on foot.
Here is a free app for Android and Apple phones and tablets. It turns a GPS enabled personal device into a sat-nav, with pre-loaded maps, route planning, voice prompts, mileage tracking and speed limit reporting.
The big boon compared to some other free sat-nav apps, is that once you’ve downloaded the app to your phone or tablet, it doesn’t need any internet connection to follow routes, search or access its maps via GPS, as you can choose which maps you need in advance and download and store them in your device.
By contrast, paid sat-nav app TomTom Go is £34.99 for three years subscription at the time of writing. Here Maps doesn’t have the same bells and whistles, but it’s still very good and a major saving!
