Saint Nicholas Day, Thassos
Retail outlets on Thassos and across Greece will remain closed this Saturday, the day of the festival of Saint Nicholas (Agios Nicholaos), which falls each year on December 6.
Saint Nicholas is considered to be the patron of Greece. He is known as the protector of sailors and fishermen, which is why small fishing boats are a symbol for St. Nicholas Day, the time when Christmas preparations begin in Greece. He is also the patron saint of merchants.
The church in Limenas (Thassos Town), situated next to the ancient Agora, is dedicated to the saint and plays a central role in the day’s celebrations on Thassos.
As December 6 falls on a Saturday this year, most supermarkets and shops will be closed for the whole weekend.
