Strong Tremor in North Greece

November 5 – An earthquake of a revised magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale occurred this morning at 09:16 local time, 11 km west northwest of Xanthi, Northern Greece. The tremor was felt strongly in the mainland city of Kavala and on the island of Thassos, located 42 km south of the epicentre.

The focal depth of the quake was 15 km.

There are no reports of injuries or damage.

Light aftershocks of magnitude 1.4 and 1.1 occurred at 09:25 and 10:39, respectively, in the near vicinity of the primary tremor.

The quake occurred on the large Xanthi/Chrysopouli fault, and therefore, seismologists will be monitoring the situation in the coming hours. However, the experts stress there is no reason for concern.

The Xanthi/Chrysoupoli region is located within the Kavala-Xanthi-Komotini fault zone, which is over 100 km long and composed of several complex active fault systems with varying orientations and geometries. The fault zone had already exhibited evidence of recent reactivation.
