Supermoon, October 7

Tuesday, October 7, will see the first supermoon of 2025, known as a “Harvest Moon”.

If the weather permits, it is expected to be the biggest and brightest view of the Moon this year as its orbit brings it to its closest approach to the Earth; the last such event was in November 2024.

December this year will see a trio of supermoons, up to and including December, marking an Autumn of astronomical spectacles.

The name “Harvest Moon” is associated with the autumnal equinox and agricultural traditions, while traditionally October also hosts the so-called “Hunter’s Moon.” In practice, this year the two names coincide, capturing both the agricultural cycle and the ancient hunting by moonlight.

According to NASA, supermoons appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than regular full moons, making for a rare sight.
