The village of Embonas is holding its 66th Wine & Moustalevria Festival on Friday, August 22 and Saturday, the 23rd. The village is located in the central western highlands, 51 km (32 miles) south of Rhodes Town.
The hillside village of Embonas has views over craggy vineyards and is the centre of wine production on Rhodes, with several wineries open for tastings and tours. Tavernas serve local chima wine and souma liqueur, while stores offer honey and olive oil soaps. Farming tools and handmade embroidered rugs are on display at Embonas Folklore Museum, and the ruined Temple of Attavyros Zeus is a short, steep drive away.
Moustalevria or must jelly is a traditional Greek kind of pudding made of grape must mixed with flour and boiled until thick. Moustokouloura, must biscuits or must cookies are the biscuit version.
Entertainment will include traditional music, song and dance.
Wine and food will be available, and all are welcome. The festival is free to attend.
