Sea Diamond to be Raised? Santorini

On October 20, 2017, the Greek Shipping Minister, Panagiotis Kouroumblis, ordered that the wreck of the cruise ship ‘Sea Diamond’ should be raised, but so far no plans have been proposed, due to legal wrangling on who is responsible for the cost.

The ship sank on April 5, 2007, after running aground on a reef inside the caldera of Santorini the previous day, leaving two passengers lost, a man and his daughter.

“It has remained at the bottom of the caldera for 17 years, with all the consequences this has had for the marine environment of one of the most touristic areas of Greece and the world,” the ministry confirmed in a press release.

The Sea Diamond lies bow up, between 62 and 180 metres down, directly below the cliffs, north of the port of Athinios and 3km south of Fira town.
