Spring and Autumn Breaks on Thassos
Whilst the time for beach holidays on Thassos fades in early October and doesn’t start until May, the island is still a magical venue for Autumn and Spring breaks for those interested in walking, sightseeing, archaeology, or sport fishing.
Known as the ‘Emerald Island’, it is unique among the Aegean islands, with much of the island covered by forests of pine and fir with the central peaks forming a magnificent backdrop to the coastal areas.
For Western Europeans, low-cost flights through easyJet, Ryanair, BA, Aegean and Germanwings will take you into Thessaloniki from where you can hire a car (or take a coach) to the ferry ports in Keramoti, or Kavala, taking around 2 hours. The last part of your journey will be a short ferry ride over to the island.
Thassos is a haven of peace and tranquillity during the Autumn and early spring months, with the locals engaged in the more traditional work. The weather, although more changeable, invariably offers bright warm days with crisp cool nights.
However, during the winter months, many of the businesses close, but there are still a number of hotels and restaurants that stay open to cater for the out-of-season tourists, especially in Thassos Town.
