Danger of Hot Brakes!
After numerous incidents in Greece of parked cars and trucks unexpectedly rolling away, please note that especially in the heat of summer when the brakes have become red-hot through use, both disks/pads and drums/shoes will have expanded. Then, although drivers may apply the hand brake when parking, the brake parts will cool and contract and in some cases this will release the brakes.
Yesterday, August 29, a 46-year-old Bulgarian tourist was seriously injured in Skala Maries on the island of Thassos, when he was crushed between his car and the vehicle parked in front. Apparently, after parking his car he had walked between the two when his car rolled forward and pinned him between the two. His injuries were so serious, he was rushed to Kavala Hospital on the mainland. His condition has not yet been confirmed.
When parking, it is strongly advised to place a vehicle in first gear as well as applying the hand brake.
