Full Face Snorkel Mask Danger!
Please be aware that there has been growing evidence regarding the danger of such masks due to the potential build-up of carbon dioxide and the possibility of snorkellers experiencing breathing difficulties whilst wearing this mask design. (Google search ‘full face mask dangers’ for worldwide warnings.)
Extract from April 2023 ‘Dive’ Magazine:- “A coroner has warned that full-face snorkel masks could be putting ‘millions of people’ at risk, following the death in 2020 of a tourist wearing such a mask while snorkelling near the Red Sea Resort of Hurghada. Full-face snorkel masks have long been thought to be the underlying cause of a number of snorkelling fatalities. Concerns were raised in 2018 following a series of snorkelling deaths in Hawaii, widely reported at the time to have been caused by an excessive build-up of carbon dioxide in the mask”.
For humans even a small increase of CO2 in the air we breathe is dangerous. Normal outdoor air has an average CO2 percentage of 0.04%. At 1.5% CO2 content humans react by increased heart rate and at just 4% CO2 there is an immediate danger of death through Hypoxia.
Our strong recommendation to be safe when snorkelling is to use the tried and tested design of a half-face mask with a separate snorkel.
Only last year, a tourist drowned on the island of Thassos whilst using such a mask.
