Hydration Alternative
A scientific study in the USA has confirmed that as far as hydrating the body is concerned, water, either still or sparkling, may not be the very best drink.
Amongst the range of drinks analysed, milk, either whole or skimmed, was found to be the number one hydration drink.
Milk is rich in electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, which help retain fluids in the body. It also contains proteins and carbohydrates, which slow down digestion, prolonging the presence of water in the body.
However, water will still remain the most popular hydrating drink under normal circumstances, but there are times when milk can be an even more effective choice, such as after intense physical activity, in children and the elderly, and especially for anyone suffering from mild dehydration.
