Melanoma Risk

As the incidents of heatwaves around the world increase, cases of Melanoma are also increasing. Scientists are warning people to take more care in protecting themselves from the effects of the sun’s UV radiation.

Melanomas are a serious type of skin cancer that can spread to other parts of the body and in many cases require surgery.

Melanoma is usually curable when detected and treated early. However, once it has spread deeper into the skin or other parts of the body, it becomes more difficult to treat and can be fatal.

The medical advice is:-

  • Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm

  • Never stay in the sun until you burn

  • Do not fall asleep whilst sunbathing
  • Cover up with suitable clothing (including a wide-brimmed hat and long-sleeved top) and sunglasses

  • Take extra care with children as their skin is more sensitive to UV

  • Keep infants shaded at all times
  • Use at least factor-30 sunscreen when out in the sun
