Swim Shoes

As we state in our travel guides, wearing a pair of swim shoes is highly recommended, as they help to stop you slipping on wet surfaces, as well as protecting you from sharp stones and even worse, sea urchin spines in the sea.

If you want to buy swim shoes when you arrive, most supermarkets sell them at around €8-10. However, although the design available on the islands does protect the feet, the one drawback we have found is that as most have sides with netting style material (which are okay at the pool), on the beach the shoes tend to fill up with wet sand, making them not so comfortable to wear out of the sea.

One solution we have found is a product called ‘Aqua Yoga Socks’, available back in the UK. The name is a little misleading as they are shoes, not socks! These fit tighter around the feet and do not have netting sides, although water does readily soak out of them.

We have tried these on the beach and the same protection is afforded as with the locally available swim shoes, but have found little or no sand enters the shoe, so they are comfortable to wear when you leave the sea.

The Aqua Socks are in stock on Amazon.co.uk (link below) at £9.99 (plus P&P) and are available in a wide range of designs and colours.

We have only been testing them for a short time, so we don’t yet know how durable they are. However, they are good quality and seem well suited to the task.

One tip is if you don’t want a tight fit, buy a size larger than usual, they need to be close fitting to stop the ingress of sand, but some have found that the sizes are small.
