Warmest Winter Temperatures on Record
The EU’s climate change service, Copernicus, has confirmed that the winter months of December, January and February (2023/2024) were the warmest on record in Greece, matching the month on month increase in global temperatures.
The world’s sea surface is also at its hottest on record, while Antarctic sea-ice has continued to reduce.
February’s exceptional conditions led to particularly severe weather afflicting western Australia, southeast Asia, southern Africa and South America.
Researchers have stated that although temperatures are still being boosted by the Pacific’s El Niño weather event, human-caused climate change is by far the main driver of the warming.
A further affect of humananity’s impact on the earth has been highlighted by The Lancet Planetary Health journal, in a published report that confirms that more than one million deaths worldwide each year are due to short-term exposure to air pollution.
East Asia reports more than half of the deaths worldwide, while Europe accounts for 12% of deaths.
