Ancient Wine Making

Just 2km from the archaeological site of the ancient city of Philippi, on the mainland opposite Thassos, lies the prehistoric site of Dikili Tash.

Discoveries at the site confirm that wine-making was well established here as early as the Neolithic Period. These are the oldest examples of the process ever recorded in Europe, dating back to 4,200 B.C. and revise the existing theories regarding the complexity and sophistication of life during the Neolithic period.

Dimitra Malamidou, Co-Director of the excavations stated.“It is an impressive and important discovery. We knew that people drank wine in the Bronze Age (from the 12th century B.C.), but now we learn that the wine-making process was known long before that period”.
