Wines of Northern Greece

The wines of Northern Greece are becoming ever more popular, with visits to the region’s wineries increasing year-on-year. In 2023, direct sales at the region’s wineries topped 7.2 million euros, with expections that this year will be even greater.

Northern Greece has 35 wineries, stretching from Zitsa in Epirus and reaching as far as Adriani near Drama and south to Krania Olympus. Of those, 28 are more actively involved in wine tourism.

Thassos wine was highly praised in ancient times and was a major export to all corners of the known world, but during the later Roman period, olive cultivation took precedence and wine production declined. However to this day, private growers around the island still produce some excellent wines, as in the mountain villages around Kazaviti, which are renowned for their quality wines. Kazaviti (casa vitis) is a Roman name meaning “house of the grapevine”.
