Dengue Fever

As climate change in Europe increases the risk of disease-carrying mosquitoes becoming an invasive threat, taking precautions such as anti-mosquito body sprays, room vapour repellents and the use of window and door insect screens are recommended, especially from dusk to dawn.

One disease that has been increasing in the Mediterranean region is Dengue Fever, which, although to date there have only been a small number of cases, the figure has doubled from 2022 to 2023, with the invasive tiger mosquito that carries the pathogen now found in 13 EU countries.

Dengue Fever symptoms include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains and characteristic skin itching and rash. Recovery generally takes two to seven days. In a small proportion of cases, the disease develops into severe dengue, which can be more dangerous to health.
