For those who detest, or are allergic to the bite of mosquitoes, you can kill them effectively (and have a little fun!) with an electronic bug swatter, which is also effective against most insects including wasps.

You just press (and keep pressing) the button on the handle and swing it at the mosquito, or any other bug. The little critter will come into contact with both the internal mesh and the outer mesh of the racket, delivering a high voltage to the insect and killing it. Release the button when you have killed the bug. Larger insects tend to be just stunned, so you will need to zap them again.

There are two types available, one is rechargeable and the alternative is battery-powered (2 AA batteries).

The design of the electronic mosquito swatter is relatively simple and it can be left after use without cleaning. Unlike other insect solutions, electronic mosquito swatters do not use chemicals, so they are kind to the environment, but of course, not to bugs!

You can purchase the swatters at most large supermarkets on the islands, usually priced between 8€ and 10€. They are also available in the UK from such online retailers as Ebay and Amazon.

When using a swatter, always keep in mind that you are dealing with an electric device, which must be handled responsibly!

• After the power button is off, electrostatic charge will still remain on the mesh for a while. This can be seen if dust gets on the surface of the electric grid, it produces sparks and a crackling sound. Therefore, you should leave the swatter for a while to thoroughly discharge the mesh into the air. Under no circumstances allow the device to come in contact with water.
• Do not touch the electric grid as the electric charge is strong and you can receive a shock that can be painful and for some, could be more serious! Also, be sure that the device is out of reach of small children and pets.
• Always read the instructions on the packaging.
• However, if used sensibly, electronic swatters are safe and effective!
