The mountainous interior of Thassos is incredibly beautiful and highly recommended to experience. However, the interior is also dangerous for those unfamiliar with the hundreds of unmarked rough tracks and trails that criss-cross the mountains. There are also deep ravines and precipitous drops of hundreds of metres that add to the hazards for the inexperienced.

In the last few years, a number of tourists have become lost in the mountains and were forced to call out the emergency services. Thankfully, all were eventually found safe and well.

Rental cars are banned from going off-road and therefore cannot be taken into the mountains. It should be noted that the cost of repairing any damage incurred off-road is the responsibility of the renter, which could run into many hundreds of euros.
