The tomb of Philip II at Vergina
For the adventurous independent traveller to Thassos, we suggest that Thassos can also act as a perfect base for exploring further afield within Greece. The main northern motorway the E90 passes within 2 km of Kavala, allowing fast access to both the east and west of northern Greece*. If flying independently into Thessaloniki, by hiring a car***, the magnificent sites of Meteora, the royal necropolis of Alexander the Great’s family and the Palace of Aigai at Vergina, Pella, Odessa Waterfalls, Alistrati Caves** and Philippi** are all within reach. Thassos can then be your final destination for a more relaxing finale to your holiday (Thessaloniki to the Thassos ferry at Kavala or Keramoti is approx. 2hrs to 2hrs 30 minutes by car, all but a short distance being via the E90 motorway). For the package holiday visitor with a hire car, you can take the ferry to the mainland from where you can also explore these mainland attractions (you are required to advise the hire company that you will be visiting the mainland).
Meteora
Driving from Thessaloniki to Meteora is easy, except for the last 45 minutes when the road winds through continual bends as it ascends up to Meteora and the six monasteries, perched high on their outcrops. Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From Thessaloniki, follow the signs to E90 (Egnatia motorway) heading west to Kozani-Veria. Stay on E90 (take care not to head towards Athens) and then it is a 2-3 hour highway driving. Be advised that E90 is a toll road with several toll stops along the way. After Grevena, take the exit toward Trikala. That last 45-minute drive through the winding mountain roads is the hardest part, but be patient and eventually, you will arrive at Kalambaka, the nearest town to the monasteries.
It is recommended that you take SatNav with you to help with navigation.
Vergina (Palace of Aigai)
Vergina, is a small town located just 70 km from Thessaloniki. It became famous when a Greek archaeologist discovered the magnificent burial site of the Kings of Macedon, including what is claimed to be the tomb of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great.
The archaeological site of Aigai is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and comprises a magnificent museum built to protect the tombs and the archaeological wonders of the Macedonian royal family.
Pella
Pella, was the ancient capital of King Archelaus of Macedonia at the end of the 5th century B.C. and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The city lies about 45 km northwest of Thessaloníki and 52 km from Vergina.
Originally known as Bounomos, the city developed rapidly under Philip II (father of Alexander the Great), but, after the defeat of the last Macedonian king by the Romans (168 B.C.), it contracted to just a small provincial town.
The site of Pella, has long been known. Excavations there by the Greek Archaeological Service began in 1957 revealing large, well-built houses with colonnaded courts and rooms with mosaic floors portraying such scenes as a lion hunt and Dionysius riding a panther. These mosaics are made with small natural pebbles of various colours, carefully matched and laid, and are masterpieces of their kind. They date from the late 4th century bc. Excavations revealed the town to be laid out on a rectangular grid plan with streets more than 10 metres wide. Under the streets are terra-cotta pipes for distributing fresh water.
Major improvements at the site were completed in 2017 to improve the visitor experience and access to the archaeology.
There is a museum on the site.
Edessa Waterfalls
Located just 1½ hrs by car from Thessaloniki (92km), the Edessa Waterfalls are the most spectacular in Greece. You can walk beneath the waterfalls, enjoy the views from the bridge over the main waterfall, view the beautiful pools and visit the adjoining Waterfall Park.
There are guided tours which are on foot, but these are not challenging to the majority of people.
Alistrati Cave
Alistrati Cave is one of the most beautiful caves in Europe. Its passages are 3 km long, approximately 1 km of which can be visited. The guided tour lasts about 1 hour during which the visitor can encounter huge stalactites up to 18 metres in length, in a variety of colours and shapes. The cave is open all year round. The ‘A to Z Guide to Thassos’ contains detailed information on the cave and surrounding area.
Philippi
The ‘A to Z Guide to Thassos’ contains comprehensive information on Philippi, including its history, site information and details on how to visit.
