Old Kindles

Amazon has confirmed that support for their e-readers released before 2013 is to be discontinued.

Starting May 20, 2026, people using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.

The good news is that their devices will continue to work, so owners of these devices will be able to continue to read the existing e-books they already have, or even manually upload new content to them.

If you deregister or factory reset these devices, you will not be able to re-register them or use them in any way,” the company has confirmed. The models affected include:

  • Kindle: Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
  • Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
  • Kindle Keyboard (2010)
  • Kindle 4 (2011)
