Severe Heatwave Affecting Western Europe

Western Europe is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave that is affecting millions of people across the region.

At present, France is the worst affected with temperatures exceeding 40°Celcius and weather forecasts predicting further rises in the coming days. Even at night, temperatures are excessive, with people resorting to sleeping in parks, next to rivers and canals to get some relief. The French government has closed 845 schools until the conditions improve.

Spain is also experiencing temperatures around 40°Celcius in its eastern regions, while the south of the UK is seeing temperatures exceeding 35°Celcius and increasing.

In Portugal, the highest temperatures are forecast for inland areas, including the Douro Valley, Beira Baixa, Ribatejo and Alentejo. In the hottest locations, thermometers could reach 42°C to 44°C if current projections are confirmed.

According to the latest forecast for Greece, temperatures will continue to rise to 30 to 32° Celcius across the country and may reach 36/37° in the west.

The so-called “Thermal Dome” now affecting  Western Europe will likely move east to bring severe heat waves to Greece and the Balkan countries.

Health authorities across Europe are advising people to take extra precautions during periods of extreme heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and checking on elderly relatives, young children and other vulnerable individuals.
