Pentecost in Greece
The Christian holy day of Pentecost (Whitsun), which is celebrated fifty days after Easter Sunday, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles.
This year, Orthodox Pentecost is celebrated throughout Greece on Sunday/Monday, May 31/June 1.
Orthodox Whit Monday, June 1, is a public holiday in Greece, with official offices and banks closed. However, tourist facilities such as restaurants, bars, shops and most attractions will be open.
