The Main Fires are Out.
Regarding the recent major wildfires across Greece, especially the infernos in Western Attica, Boeotia, Crete and Kefalonia, although out of danger, firefighters continue their arduous tasks of preventing flare-ups.
However, the devastating images from the vast expanses of smoking wasteland only partly illustrate the human and wildlife tragedies that the fires wrought. Lives have been lost, homes destroyed, property and livelihoods wiped out, and now people will be called upon to manage the consequences of indescribable destruction.
The picture is heartbreaking for those who will soon be allowed to return to where their homes were and where they made a life. However, access to the area is still extremely difficult, as the roads remain impassable in many places and the resurgence of fires continues, which still does not allow the safe movement of residents and those workers who will endeavour to reinstate services.
