The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has announced that the fire service on the Northern Aegean island of Thassos is to receive 5 extra firefighters to reinforce the existing fire department.

There are also calls for further strengthening of the island’s fire service in 2027, both in terms of personnel numbers and in the quality and quantity of the forces’ front-line firefighting equipment.

The island comprises major forestry regions and is increasingly at risk of wildfires in the summer months, due to both the growing severity and frequency of heat waves.
